10th -16th June 2019 is Cervical Screening Awareness Week
Having a smear test is one of those things on the “to do” list that many women dread. Recent research reports as many as 1 in 3 women “fear the smear” and would rather avoid screening despite it being a proven lifesaving tool.
Smear tests save an estimated 4500 lives in England each year. It’s an essential tool in our fight against cervical cancer. We have robust evidence which implicates the HPV virus in over 99% of cervical cancers.
HPV stands for the Human Papilloma Virus, the most common sexually transmitted infection. In the UK. It can pass on during sexual contact and condoms do not provide 100% protection against the spread.
There are over 100 different strains of HPV,40 of which affect the genitals. In the majority of cases patients are symptom free, in others, an HPV infection can give rise to genital warts and in a very small number, cell changes resulting from HPV infection can ultimately cause cancer.
